February 09, 2014 Ben McKenzie Cast as James Gordon in Fox's Upcoming Gotham TV SeriesActor Ben McKenzie is joining the police force once again on the small screen, only this time he will be inhabiting the coveted role of detective James Gordon in Fox's Gotham series set within the world that gives birth to Batman.

McKenzie will play a younger version of Commission Gordon who most recently appeared in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight films and was portrayed by Gary Oldman. In Gotham, Gordon's tale will veer toward an "origin" as Batman's greatest ally will begin working his way up the Gotham Police Department ranks.

Speaking of Batman, he won't appear in Gotham, though a preteen Bruce Wayne will. The show has been set up so that as it completes its run, Bruce Wayne will don the Batman costume for the first time much like Clark Kent donned the Superman costume in the final episode of The CW's Smallville.

Gotham will see Gordon work numerous cases including those for criminals who will evolve into Batman's greatest foes and villains. Who exactly those villains are hasn't been revealed as of yet, but the expectation is for some big names to make an appearance and have their origin stories fleshed out on the small screen.

McKenzie is no stranger to the Batman world having voiced Bruce Wayne and Batman in the 2011 animated feature Batman: Year One. He originally rose to stardom in The OC, then found another long-running role in Southland as a beat cop.

Fox and Warner Bros. TV are rolling the dice on Gotham having already ordered the show to series for a full season before shooting the pilot, which Bruno Heller wrote. Heller will executive produce the series along with Danny Cannon, who will direct the pilot episode.

Gotham will premiere on Fox this fall with the exact day and time expected to be revealed this summer, possibly during Comic-Con in July.
