Stem Cell Treatment May Help Heart Attack Recovery - RTT News

Stem cell treatment may provide a new option for those recovering from a heart attack, according to researchers from the Barts Health NHS Trust in the U.K. For the study the researchers examined over 3,000 volunteers from eleven European nations.

All of the participants were recovering from heart attacks and were undergoing standard treatment including tubes to widen arteries. Half of the group also had stem cells inserted into the arteries. They found that those who had stem cell treatment in adding to standard treatments showed better recovery results over all.

"After 15 years of research we will now have a clear answer. We hope to show that stem-cell injections can cut the number of people dying from heart attacks by 25 percent," the researchers explained. "If it works, it would open up a whole new branch of medicine, and give heart attack patients an entirely new treatment."
