Will Smith Will Not Star In Independence Day Sequel - RTT News

Monday, February 10, 2014

Will Smith will not reprise his role in the upcoming sequel to "Independence Day." Last summer it was announced that the box office smash would see its sequel released to theaters on July 3, 2015.

The film launched Smith's career upon its release in 1996, but a source, speaking with Deadline, says he's not interested in returning for a second go around.

Director Roland Emmerich has however confirmed that Bill Pullman will return in his role as President Thomas J. Whitmore, while Jeff Goldblum will be returning as geeky computer expert David Levinson.

Emmerich previously noted that two scripts for the picture had been written - one featuring Smith's character, Captain Steven Hiller fighting off another alien invasion, and another without him.

The sequel is tentatively titled "ID Forever Part 1."
