Independent senator and socialist Bernie Sanders of Vermont told TIME that he's open to making a bid for the presidency in 2016. And not only that, but he'd make a helluva better candidate than Hillary Clinton, the presumed shoe-in for the role on the Democrat side over two years out.
"We need candidates who are prepared to represent the working families of this country, and I am prepared to be that candidate" stated Sanders, in a wide-ranging interview that touched on drug legalization, the economy, and the influence of wealth on politics. "If you talk about the need for a political revolution in America, it's fair to say that Secretary Clinton probably will not be one of the more active people."
Like those who fully adopt the Democratic label, the 72-year-old Sanders railed against the influence of the ultra-rich, with a special animus directed at the Koch brothers, who are mentioned no less than nine times to the exclusion of any other proper nouns (save Sheldon Adelson). This despite a more complicated reality of campaign contributions by even wealthier, Democratic-leaning figures such as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.
"We have seen the very richest people in the country use their money for political purposes in a way that is probably unprecedented," Sanders added. "To me, that combination of economic power and political power means to me that this country is moving very rapidly toward an oligarchic form of society, where a handful of billionaires control the economic and political life of this country."
