Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies will be the captains for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game. The event will be held July 14 at Target Field, the night before the showcase game in Minneapolis.

Bautista will pick the other four members of the American League team for the derby. Tulowitzki will invite four players for the National League side.

Bautista is a two-time home run champion. Tulowitzki has hit at least 25 homers in three of the past four seasons.

Rays take BP against female knuckleballer • Tampa Bay took batting practice against 17-year-old Chelsea Baker before Monday’s game against Pittsburgh. Rays manager Joe Maddon says the junior, who plays on the Durant High School baseball team, was outstanding and has a knuckleball that “moves nicely.”

Baker pitched from about 10 feet in front of the mound and behind a protective screen. She says the late major league knuckleballer Joe Niekro taught her to throw the fluttering pitch about 10 years ago.

Phillips out with heel injury • Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was out of the starting lineup for Cincinnati’s game at the Chicago Cubs because of a bruised right heel.

Phillips got hurt on a backswing during Sunday’s 4-3 win over Toronto. Skip Schumaker got the start at second on Monday.

Mariners sign Jackson • Seattle signed high school standout Alex Jackson, its first-round pick from the draft.

Jackson was regarded as the best high school position player available in the draft. He was a star at Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) High, where he batted .400 in his senior season. His 45 career homers are tied for the most in San Diego area history.

Harper to start rehab assignment • Washington outfielder Bryce Harper was scheduled to start a minor league rehab assignment Monday at Class A Potomac for his injured left thumb. Nationals manager Matt Williams said he could return around July 1.

The 2012 NL rookie of the year was hitting .289 with nine RBIs before injuring his thumb on a slide into third base. He was put on the DL on April 27 and had ligament surgery two days later.
