Nia Sanchez: Miss USA 2014!

After her win, Sanchez will go on from the 63rd Miss USA to represent the United States of America at the Miss Universe competition later this year.

2013 champion Erin Brady, of South Glastonbury, Connecticut gave up her crown after a three-hour telecast from the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana.

At the pageant, Sanchez said women need to be able to defend themselves as a way to battle the problem of campus rape, an issue that also requires awareness.

In a beautiful, red floor-length fishtail gown, Miss Nevada answered judge Rumer Willis' question about the high rate of sexual assaults on college campuses.

Willis asked Sanchez why she thinks the issue is swept under the rug and what should be done about it. The black belt said self defense is paramount.

Sanchez said she lived for a time in a women's shelter at a young age with her mom and took up taekwondo for protection and to build up her confidence.

Nia Sanchez: Miss USA!

Nia Sanchez is your new Miss USA for 2014. Congratulations Nia on a job well done.

As an adult, she has volunteered at women's shelters, teaching residents how to defend themselves and teaching kids about "stranger danger."

"I relate to them on a personal level because I've been there myself," she said.

Nia Sanchez also said she was "so proud to bring the title of Miss USA back to Nevada. "I'm so excited," she said. "It's a dream come true."

First runner-up for Miss USA 2014 was Miss North Dakota Audra Mari.

They say second place is the first loser, but not in this case. She will take over the crown when the inevitable photo scandal surfaces involving Sanchez.

Just kidding ... we hope.

Other top runners-up: Miss Louisiana Brittany Guidry; Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs, Miss Florida Brittany Oldehoff and Miss Iowa Carlyn Bradarich.

Bradarich got a second chance when the viewing audience gave her the most votes on Twitter, but the night belonged to Sanchez through and through.

Congratulations!
