After London respite, Maryland taxi companies sue Uber - Delhi Daily News

In US, over 30 Maryland cab companies have filed a lawsuit against the ride-sharing company Uber on Thursday.

The suit alleges anti-trust violations and demands an unspecified amount of damages for upending the state's cab industry.

Meanwhile in UK, London transit authority has dropped plans to take the controversial taxi hiring app to court because the courts are already too busy with cases against many individual Uber drivers.

The Uber app allows users to call a taxi or private hire vehicle to your location from your smartphone and pay through the app after reaching the destination.

The cab service is operating in more than 100 cities in 37 countries with no cash changing hands. But, Uber has displeased cab services across the world. The London taxi drivers of the iconic black cab, are angry with the authorities that they have allowed the controversial Uber to operate there.

The local authority, Transport for London (TfL) has responded by announcing its plans to refer its decision to the UK's High Court. The TfL has issued a new statement today revealing that the High Courts cannot proceed because of smaller cases in the magistrates' court against individual drivers.

The statement says that six such actions have been taken by cabbie trade organisation the London Taxi Drivers' Association (LTDA). The TfL reckons those cases will probably end up in the High Court anyway.

Meanwhile, the transport body has clarified its stand saying that it was right to allow Uber to operate. "TfL's position, supported by legal advice," maintains the authority, "is that there are no grounds to take action against Uber London Ltd, Uber BV (the parent company based in Holland), or Uber drivers under s.2 of the 1998 Private Hire Vehicle (Licensing) Act."
