West Nile Virus has been reported throughout San Bernardino County, health officials said today.
Dead birds in San Bernardino, Rialto, Fontana and Upland tested positive for the virus, according to the county’s Division of Environmental Health Service’s Mosquito and Vector Control Program.
The samples were taken from late July, prior to recent rains.
Symptoms of West Nile virus usually occur two to 15 days after infections, according to health officials.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 70 percent to 80 percent of those infected develop no symptoms at all, and are even unaware that they’re infected.
People infected with West Nile fever may experience flu-like symptoms that can include fever, body aches, skin rash, and fatigue, health officials said.
But for others, West Nile fever can develop into a more serious form of the disease. Health officials suggest if bitten by mosquitoes and you are experiencing these symptoms, contact your medical care provider, health officials added.
