Harvick earns his 8th pole of Sprint Cup Series season
Kevin Harvick shattered his own Kansas Speedway record and won the pole to start the second round of the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. He posted the top speed of 197.773 mph in the second round of qualifying and won the pole with a lap of 197.621 in the final session Friday.
Harvick set the previous record of 194.658 at the Kansas City, Kan., track on May 9. He has won eight poles this season.
Brian Vickers qualified in second for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at 196.307.
Enumclaw’s Kasey Kahne, one of 12 drivers remaining in the Chase, qualified in 10th. Greg Biffle of Vancouver, Wash., will start in 11th; he was among four drivers eliminated from the Chase last weekend.
Defending series champion Jimmie Johnson spun out during qualifying and will start in 32nd, the lowest he has started a Chase race since 2005.

Lewis leads Lang in China
Top-ranked Stacy Lewis birdied the final hole for a 5-under-par 68 and a two-stroke lead over fellow Texan Brittany Lang after the second round of the Reignwood LPGA Classic in Beijing.
Lewis had a 12-under 134 total at Reignwood Pine Valley.
“It was a day that I just had to stay patient,” Lewis said. “Even coming in, I could have made a few more birdies. Didn’t quite hit the shots around the greens that I needed to.”
Jacquelin has Dunhill lead
Raphael Jacquelin of France birdied his last two holes for a 2-under 70 to break clear of a tightly packed leaderboard and take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a European Tour event in Scotland.
Four players — Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry of Ireland, Alexander Levy of France and Oliver Wilson of England — were in a tie for second. At one stage late in the day, nine players were tied for the lead.
Jacquelin was at 9-under 135 for 36 holes.
The tournament is played on three courses, with 11 of the players in the top 12 having played Kingsbarns on Friday. Lowry was the exception, shooting a 70 at St. Andrews.
Top-ranked Rory McIlroy shot a 67 at Kingsbarns and is five strokes off the lead.

D.C. United, Sporting KC tie
Host D.C. United, which leads the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference, and defending MLS champion Sporting Kansas City played to a scoreless draw.
D.C. United (15-9-7) clinched a playoff berth. Sporting Kansas City (13-11-7) is in second place in the East, six points behind D.C. United.
Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum made seven saves, and D.C. United keeper Bill Hamid had three.
CSKA Moscow fans banned
UEFA officials banned CSKA Moscow fans from attending any Champions League group matches this season after a series of racist and violent incidents, making the toughest use yet of its stronger powers to tackle discrimination in soccer.
CSKA was ordered to play its next three UEFA competition matches in an empty stadium by UEFA’s disciplinary panel.
Kaka returns to Brazil team
Kaka, 32, is back with Brazil’s national team after an absence of more than 18 months.
Coach Dunga called up the playmaker to replace injured midfielder Ricardo Goulart for matches against Argentina (Oct. 11 in Beijing) and Japan (Oct. 14 in Singapore).
College basketball
Alford gets 1-year extension
UCLA men’s coach Steve Alford is getting a one-year contract extension through the 2020-21 season.
Alford guided the Bruins to a 28-9 record, the Pac-12 tournament title and the school’s first Sweet 16 appearance since 2008. Alford tied Gene Bartow (1975-76) for the most victories by a coach in his first season at UCLA.
NBA
Atlanta mayor seeks change
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said he hopes the Hawks will have a new owner by the end of the year. He said he got assurance from commissioner Adam Silver last week the league was committed to keeping the Hawks in Atlanta.
The team has been under fire since racially charged comments by owner Bruce Levenson and general manager Danny Ferry were revealed. Levenson is selling his majority share of the team, and Ferry has taken an indefinite leave of absence.
ELSEWHERE
• Rafael Nadal of Spain was knocked out of the China Open in his third tennis match back from an extended injury layoff, falling to qualifier Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-3 in Beijing.
