The Tide (9-1, 6-1 SEC, No. 5 CFP) reasserted itself as a national title contender with a dominant first half and some clutch play in the fourth quarter.
Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs (9-1, 5-1, No. 1 CFP) kept fighting to keep their first-ever reign going for a sixth week. They couldn't conquer Alabama at raucous Bryant-Denny Stadium, though.
Mississippi State scored early in the fourth to make it a six-point game, but Sims and Yeldon answered with a steady march to the end zone.
The Bulldogs produced a touchdown with 15 seconds left after a drive took three minutes off the clock.
Alabama recovered the onside kick to secure its seventh straight win in the series between two programs separated by 85 miles, and considerable gaps in tradition.
Florida St. 30, Miami 26 - The No. 2 Seminoles continued their season of rallies by erasing a 16-point deficit to beat the Hurricanes at home. They were down 16-0 and 23-7 before outscoring the Hurricanes 23-3 in the final 21/2 quarters.
Dalvin Cook ran for two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter that allowed Florida State (10-0, 7-0 ACC, No. 3 CFP) to remain the only unbeaten ranked team. Jameis Winston completed 25 of 42 passes for 304 yards for the Seminoles, who extended their winning streak to 26 games and beat Miami (6-4, 3-3 ACC) for the fifth straight time.
Northwestern 43, Notre Dame 40 (OT) - Jack Mitchell kicked a 45-yard field goal with 19 seconds left to force overtime and then kicked a 41-yard field goal to give the Wildcats (4-6) a stunning road win over the 15th-ranked Irish (7-3, No. 18 CFP).
Both teams turned the ball over four times in a sloppy game. Notre Dame's final turnover occurred with 1:28 left when the Irish were trying to run out the clock and the usually reliable Cam McDaniel fumbled at the Northwestern 33-yard line and the ball was recovered by the Wildcats.
TCU 34, Kansas 30 - Aaron Green ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns and Cameron Echols-Luper returned a punt 69 yards for another score to help the fifth-ranked Horned Frogs turn back the host Jayhawks' upset bid.
Trevone Boykin added 330 yards passing and a touchdown for TCU (9-1, 6-1 Big 12, No. 4 CFP), which trailed 27-17 midway through the third quarter before a big finishing kick. Chris Hackett's interception with 3:26 left in the game sealed the victory.
Michael Cummings had 332 yards and two touchdowns passing for the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6), who were trying for their first regular-season win over a top-five team since beating Colorado in 1995.
The Horned Frogs won their fifth straight, even without top running back B.J. Catalon. And with a trip to Texas followed by a home game against lowly Iowa State, they may have the easiest road standing between them and the inaugural four-team playoff.
Ohio State 31, Minnesota 24 - J.T. Barrett threw for three touchdowns and ran for 189 yards (a Buckeye quarterback record) and another score to beat the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis.
Barrett completed 15 of 25 passes for 200 yards and one interception, another stellar performance by the freshman fill-in for the injured Braxton Miller following last week's rout of Michigan State.
Barrett topped Miller's 186 yards rushing against Nebraska in 2012. With 38 touchdowns this season, he has beaten the 36 scores Miller had last year.
"I had no idea that this is who J.T. Barrett is," said Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. "Very clear picture of who he is now."
Ohio State improved to 9-1, 6-0 Big Ten, No. 8 CFP, while Minnesota fell to 7-3, 4-2, No. 25 CFP.
Rutgers 45, Indiana 23 - Gary Nova threw two touchdown passes to Leonte Carroo and Robert Martin ran for three more to lead the Scarlet Knights to their second win in the Big 10, this one coming at home over the lowly Hoosiers.
Nova and Carroo combined on scoring passes of 34 and 56 yards and Martin tallied on runs of 1, 2, and 47 yards as the Scarlet Knights (6-4, 2-4 Big Ten) snapped a three-game losing streak and sent Indiana (3-7, 0-6) to its fifth straight loss.
Georgia 34, Auburn 7 - In the latest edition of the Deep South's oldest rivalry, Nick Chubb and Todd Gurley each rushed for more than 100 yards in the Bulldogs' romp over the visiting Tigers (7-3, 4-3 SEC, No. 9 CFP). The Bulldogs improved to 8-2, 6-2 SEC, No. 15 CFP.
