MERRY CHRISTMAS FANS of patents, the technology intellectual property hydra, the Rockstar Consortium has closed off the battle against Android.
Yup, just like that. Who is to say whether three ghosts got their days mixed up this week, and who is to deny that they may have come back with something other than usury on their minds. Not us, and particularly not today.
Someone somewhere, has virtually decided tp end the ongoing, many million patent battle concerning Android by selling the pick of the bankrupt Nortel portfolio.
The technology supergroup, which includes Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Ericsson and Sony, has sold its patent nest egg to clearinghouse RPX for $900m, which is a shade under the $4.5 it paid. However, some 2000 from the 4000 patents have been shared among the consortium members.
RPX is rather pleased with its patent assets purchase, and it said that on closure of the deal, which is subject to regulatory requirements, it will make the patents available for license to all other interested companies under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
"We are pleased to act as a clearinghouse and underwrite an agreement between the owners of Rockstar and our syndicate of licensees," added John A. Amster, CEO and co-founder of RPX.
"Leading technology companies from multiple industries came together to shape this transaction. We commend everyone involved for their leadership and commitment to clearing the risk of the Rockstar portfolio by negotiating a reasonable purchase price in one efficient transaction."
Google, and some 29 other firms make up the aforemented syndicate, and from them the RPX Clearinghouse will "receive license payments", it added, meaning that they too will get access. ยต
