Scott D. Pierce: Big late-night changes here for Craig Ferguson, Stephen Colbert ... - Salt Lake Tribune

Thursday, December 18, 2014

When I commented that, unlike a lot of talk-show hosts, he actually listens to his guests — putting him a leg up on the competition — Ferguson brushed off the praise as faint.

"It’s like being more delicious than haggis," said the native Scot/naturalized American.

That quickly became a catch-phrase at my house.

In a medium in which it’s almost impossible to break the mold, Ferguson did. From his free-form monologues to the puppets and his skeleton robot sidekick, Geoff Peterson, his show was fresh and original.

Oh, and Ferguson wrote and performed "The Late Late Show’s" theme song, the best in the business.

Ironically, Ferguson’s final guest on his final show (Friday, 11:35 a.m., CBS/Ch. 2) will be Jay Leno — his polar opposite as a late-night host.

There are unconfirmed reports that Ferguson is planning a syndicated, early-evening talk show. Stay tuned …

The final "Colbert Report" airs Thursday on Comedy Central. The host will succeed Letterman at CBS, but it just won’t be the same.

Although a few people (including Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly) never seemed to figure this out, Colbert has been playing a character since the "Report" debuted in 2005. He’s not really a clueless, arrogant, right-wing political pundit.

And he won’t be playing one on the "Late Show." He’ll be playing … Stephen Colbert.

I’ll miss the clueless, arrogant, right-wing political pundit.

Letterman, who leaves CBS in May, airs his final Christmas show Friday (10:35 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2). Jay Thomas will return to tell his story about his experience with Clayton Moore, aka the Lone Ranger. Jay and Dave will throw footballs at the Christmas tree, attempting to knock the giant meatball off the top. And Darlene Love will return to sing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," as she’s done most years since 1986.

It’s eccentric. It’s fun. We’ll never see anything like it again.

Five months to go before Dave retires, and already I miss him.
