Sony Pictures describes November 24 cyber attack as “unparalleled crime”

According to a Re/code report, Hollywood studio Sony Pictures Entertainment's CEO Michael Lynton has said in an internal memo to the employees that the devastating cyber attack against the company was a hacking effort "unprecedented in nature."

Sony Pictures was hit by the massive cyber attack on November 24; and the attack - carried out by 'Guardians of Peace' (GOP) hacking outfit - virtually devastated the company's computer networks. The attack dealt a severe blow to Sony Pictures, as the hackers exposed a lot of private information about the company's employees as well as the celebrities associated with the company.

The comments made in internal memo mark the first substantive response by Sony Pictures to the cyber attack, which is being investigated by the studio with help from security firm Mandiant, and by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In the internal memo, Lynton has described the cyber attack as an "unparalleled crime" which was carried out by an "organized" hacking group. The comments are attributed to Mandiant CEO Kevin Mandia.

Noting that the GOP hackers used highly sophisticated malware to carry out the attack on Sony Pictures' computers, Mandia said: "The malware was undetectable by industry standard antivirus software and was damaging and unique enough to cause the FBI to release a flash alert to warn other organizations of this critical threat."
