ABC News - Tax season and scam artists are almost a two for one deal.

For many people it starts with a phone call or an email.

Richard Gartland / Senior Tax Advisor, H&R Block: "The IRS never, never, never telephones you. They never send you email either."

Phishing scams often include a person posing as an IRS agent demanding immediate payment or else.

Stephanie Zimmerman / The Fixer: "They threaten them with arrest or going to court or in the case of immigrants they threaten to deport them if they don't pay money immediately."

If you need help, call the IRS yourself.

Another effective scam? Fake charities.

Scammers often use names that sound familiar but aren't exactly right.

Experts recommend doing your own research and choosing your own charities.

Also, be careful who you trust with your taxes.

Richard Gartland / Senior Tax Advisor, H&R Block: "The sad news is in many states there is no requirement, there is no

education requirement to purport yourself and hang out a sign and say, 'I do taxes and I'm good at it.'"

Be wary of big promises like refunds guarantees.

Never ever sign a blank tax form for someone else to fill out.

Always find out where your tax preparer will be after April 15th in case the IRS has questions.

Avoiding these scams could save you a lot of frustration and money.

Identity theft is also a huge scam costing taxpayers more than 20 billion dollars in the last four years.
