Just 1/3 Black Americans Get Proper HIV/AIDS Treatment: Study - The Almagest

In a new study it is found only 33 percent of HIV-infected Black Americans get under-control effective treatment, even though proper medication is available.


US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says many black people infected with HIV-positive fails to get proper treatment that is required to keep the virus under control and to live healthy.


Associate director of CDC’s Health Equity Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention said there are proper treatments for HIV patient to help them live long and healthy and also to prevent spreading it further.


She added further that problem with the black men who have high rates of the infection are acute.


CDC stats reveal one black man in every sixteen of their race become infected to the infection in his lifetime. The National HIV Surveillance System and the Medical Monitoring Project for 2010 data says 75 percent of the black men had received care and out of it only 48 percent has continued to have been taking care.


Apart from this data it is also revealed that just 46 percent of the black men are given powerful antiretroviral drugs, but only 35 percent of them reach the goal of viral suppression.


The study also found that black women get higher levels of care and viral suppression than the black men. Also, young black men are more under-treated.


The agencies mention further that black men in America are far from wiping off of the HIV/AIDS.


The study was published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of CDC on February 7.
