WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Party leaders and some rank-and-file GOP lawmakers are clashing over whether to rule out another government shutdown.
GOP leaders coming off successful midterm elections say two things are clear: Last year’s government shutdown hurt the party. And Republicans must not let President Barack Obama’s pending immigration action lure them into a repeat.
But some rank-and-file GOP lawmakers say another shutdown must be an option if Obama halts the threat of deportation for large numbers of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.
Louisiana Republican Rep. John Fleming, for instance, says shutdowns “hold the president’s feet to the fire.”
GOP leaders say these lawmakers are from solidly conservative districts. They want these lawmakers to look beyond their next GOP primary and help broaden the party’s appeal in presidential elections.
