Obama Tells US Troops They've Made World 'Better, Safer' - Bloomberg

Friday, December 26, 2014

(Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama made his annual Christmas Day visit to the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, noting the U.S. will soon end military operations in Afghanistan.

“We have been at war every year for the past 13 years,” the president told service members and their families. “The world is better, it’s safer and more prosperous because of you.”

The president was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama at the Marine base. Earlier in the day, Obama and his family, who for the seventh consecutive year are having a winter vacation in Hawaii, went to the beach at Bellows Air Force Station.

“The greatest Christmas present we have is the finest military the world has ever known.”

Yesterday, prior to Christmas Eve dinner with his family and friends, Obama made holiday telephone calls to U.S. service members from each branch of the military who are currently stationed around the globe, according to a White House statement.

“The greatest Christmas present we have is the finest military the world has ever known,” Obama said today. “We could not be more thankful.”

The president and his family flew to Hawaii aboard Air Force One on Dec. 19 for a two-week vacation. Obama has no public events scheduled during the break.

Since arriving, he has golfed and bowled at the Marine Corps base, and gone to the beach and on hikes with family members.

Among Obama’s golfing partners yesterday was Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
