While naturopathy and homeopathic remedies have existed for thousands of years their benefits have only recently come to light in the United States. Perhaps it is a result of a changing—yet continually expensive—health care system, or maybe there is just an overall heightened awareness of nutrition.

And a new study indicates that some herbal extracts can enhance the power of certain medicines. Rosehip for example, appears to increase the efficacy of cancer treatments as it has been shown to dramatically reduce the development and migration of cells from a specific type of breast cancer.

In this type of cancer (known as ER+ breast cancer), oncology research assistant professor Ayesha Shajahan-Haq, PhD comments that the cancer can “switch on a pro-survival pathway, enabling tumor cells to hunker down and wait out the attack.”

The lead investigator goes on to say, “From our gene analyses, we found improved activation of the UPR pro-survival pathway in African-American sufferers, compared with other patients, along with improved activity of a quantity of genes related with that pathway. This can lead to enhanced resistance to common therapies.”

Furthermore, Shajahan-Haq continues, “Our findings provide a partial understanding of racial variations within ER+ breast cancers. We demonstrate both increased resistance to anti-cancer therapy in African-American patients as nicely as the purpose that resistance occurs,” adding, “Biology may not be the only element contributing to the racial disparities in outcome in the basic public. Variables such as access to mammography, follow-up care or remedy, earnings status and other social components have also been shown to contribute to disparities in outcome.”

Still, the use of rosehips could further increase the benefit of this very important and already effective treatment for ER+ breast cancer.
